Cursive W
How to write uppercase W and lowercase w in cursive, one stroke at a time.
Cursive w is two u-strokes that finish high. It begins like u, repeats the dip, and then ends with a bridge at the midline instead of a tail on the baseline — the same ending as b, o and v. The capital W is two V-shapes drawn to the top line and does not connect to the next letter.

Common mistakes with cursive W
- Ending on the baseline, which makes w read as "ui" or "uu".
- Making the two dips different depths.
- Squeezing the letter — w is the widest lowercase letter and needs the room.
Tips that help
- w is u plus one more upstroke and a bridge: practise "uw" and "wu" together.
- The letter after w starts at the midline — "we", "wo" and "wa" all begin from the bridge.

w and its stroke family
Undercurve letters begin with a stroke that swings up from the baseline: i, u, w, t, j, p, r, s, e, l, b, h, k and f. Learn i and u first — every other letter in the group is built on that same entry stroke.
Families are also the order to learn in, rather than A to Z: the beginner’s guide covers when w is usually taught and the four strokes every letter is built from.
Cursive W questions
How do you write a lowercase w in cursive?
Undercurve up and slant down twice, like a u with an extra dip, then undercurve up a third time and finish with a short level bridge at the midline. It ends high, not on the baseline.
How do you write a capital W in cursive?
Overcurve from the baseline to the top line, slant down, undercurve up and slant down again, then undercurve up a final time and finish with a small loop. Capital W does not connect to the next letter.
Which cursive letters end at the midline like w?
b, o, v and w. They are called bridge letters because their exit stroke is a short level bridge instead of an undercurve from the baseline.
What are some good words to practise cursive w with?
Good practice words for cursive w are web, wave, water, window and wonder. The join is what to watch: w hands over at the midline, not the baseline, so the letter after it starts up there. Watch the height too: w should stop at the midline, level with the short letters either side of it. The practice sheet on this page rules the first two, web and wave; the worksheet generator will rule the rest.
