About Cursive Alphabet

cursivealphabet.pro is a free reference for the cursive alphabet: every letter drawn stroke by stroke on ruled paper, the strokes and families the letters are built from, and practice sheets that print from the browser.

Which cursive

The letters here are American looped cursive — the connected, looped style that US school handwriting programs (Palmer, Zaner-Bloser and their descendants) are built on — every lowercase letter starts and ends with a joining stroke, tall letters loop at the top line, and f, g, j, p, q, y and z drop below the baseline. Handwriting programs differ in small details (the amount of slant, whether the capital Q looks like a 2), but the stroke construction on each letter page applies across them.

Where the letterforms come from

Every letter on the site is drawn from the outlines of the Sacramento typeface, which is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. It is a script typeface, not a school handwriting model, so a few letters (the pointed capital A, the capital G with a loop below the line) differ from the shape a particular classroom program teaches; the steps on each letter page describe the shape that is actually drawn. The charts, animations and practice sheets are drawn from those outlines when the site is built; only the worksheet generator draws in your browser as you type. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no account.

How the letters were checked

The stroke descriptions were written by hand for each letter and compared against the drawn glyph and the printable sheet. The pen paths are traced automatically from the glyph outlines, so they are checked rather than trusted: numbered markers and one colour per stroke appear only on letters whose traced path matches the taught stroke count exactly. The other letters show the traced path in a single colour with direction arrows and no numbers, rather than a number that could be wrong.

Who makes this site

cursivealphabet.pro is an independent site written and maintained by its owner. It is not affiliated with any handwriting program, school or publisher, and nothing on it is sponsored. New pages are added when a letter combination, phrase or sheet type is asked for often enough to be worth drawing properly.

What is free

Everything. The alphabet chart, the sheet on every letter page, the full-alphabet worksheets and the worksheet generator all print without sign-up or watermark. The site may carry advertising to cover its costs; it will never charge for a sheet.

Corrections

If a stroke description does not match how you were taught, or you spot a mistake, write to hello@cursivealphabet.pro. Letter pages are revised when a correction is confirmed against a handwriting program’s published letter models.
