Cursive V

How to write uppercase V and lowercase v in cursive, one stroke at a time.

Cursive v is an overcurve with a rounded bottom that ends high. Like b, o and w it is a bridge letter — it finishes at the midline with a short level stroke, so the next letter starts from up there. The capital V is the same pointed-bottom shape drawn to the top line, ending with a small loop that does not connect.

  2. Slant down to the baseline.

Common mistakes with cursive V

  • Ending on the baseline, which makes v look like a u.
  • Making a sharp point at the bottom; the cursive v is rounded so it can be written without stopping.
  • Dropping the bridge, so the next letter starts too low and a gap appears.

Tips that help

  • v is an n that stops after one hump and rises again — write "nv" to feel the difference.
  • Practise "ve" and "vi": the letter after v starts at the midline, straight off the bridge.

The pen path on this page is traced from the letterform automatically, and for v the trace did not come out as the single continuous stroke it is taught with — so the drawing shows the path in one colour, without numbers or arrows, rather than claiming a stroke order it cannot verify.

Practice words with v

Once the letter is comfortable on its own, write it inside words — that is where the joins happen. Because v is a bridge letter, watch how the letter after it starts from the midline.

v is among the least common letters in English, so it rarely comes up by chance. A pangram puts v into every line you write, which is the quickest way to keep it in practice.

v and its stroke family

Overcurve letters begin with an arch that comes over the top from the left: m, n, v, x, y and z. The hump is the whole skill — keep it round, not pointed.

Families are also the order to learn in, rather than A to Z: the beginner’s guide covers when v is usually taught and the four strokes every letter is built from.

Cursive V questions

How do you write a lowercase v in cursive?

Overcurve up to the midline, slant down to a rounded bottom at the baseline, undercurve back up to the midline and finish with a short level bridge. It ends high, like o and w.

How do you write a capital V in cursive?

Overcurve from the baseline to the top line, slant down to the baseline, and undercurve back up to the top line, finishing with a small loop. Capital V does not connect to the next letter.

Does cursive v connect to the next letter?

Yes, from the midline. v is a bridge letter, so the joining stroke is a short level line at the midline rather than a tail from the baseline.

What are some good words to practise cursive v with?

Good practice words for cursive v are van, vine, violin, valley and velvet. Keep the arch of v rounded as the word speeds up, and remember it hands over at the midline, not the baseline. Watch the height too: v should stop at the midline, level with the short letters either side of it. The practice sheet on this page rules the first two, van and vine; the worksheet generator will rule the rest.
