Cursive J

How to write uppercase J and lowercase j in cursive, one stroke at a time.

Cursive j is an i that keeps going below the baseline. It begins with the same undercurve, but instead of stopping, the slant continues down into a loop that swings to the left and returns through the baseline. Like i, it is dotted after the word is finished. The capital J is the same shape scaled up to the top line.

Common mistakes with cursive J

  • Making the descender loop too big — it should be no deeper than the letter is tall above the line.
  • Looping to the right, which turns j into a backward f.
  • Forgetting the dot: without it, j is easily read as a stray loop.

Tips that help

  • j is i plus the loop of g: if you can write those two, you can write j.
  • Keep the crossing point of the loop right on the baseline so the next letter starts level.

Practice words with j

Once the letter is comfortable on its own, write it inside words — that is where the joins happen. Watch how the exit tail of j rises to meet the next letter.

j is among the least common letters in English, so it rarely comes up by chance. A pangram puts j into every line you write, which is the quickest way to keep it in practice.

j and its stroke family

Undercurve letters begin with a stroke that swings up from the baseline: i, u, w, t, j, p, r, s, e, l, b, h, k and f. Learn i and u first — every other letter in the group is built on that same entry stroke.

Families are also the order to learn in, rather than A to Z: the beginner’s guide covers when j is usually taught and the four strokes every letter is built from.

Cursive J questions

How do you write a lowercase j in cursive?

Undercurve to the midline, slant down past the baseline, loop to the left and come back up through the baseline, then exit with a tail. Dot it above the midline once the word is done.

How do you write a capital J in cursive?

Undercurve from the baseline to the top line, loop over, slant down below the baseline, loop left and return up through the baseline, then exit. It is a large version of the lowercase j and it connects to the next letter.

Does cursive J have a dot?

Lowercase j does; capital J does not. Add the lowercase dot after finishing the word, directly above the stem and a little higher than the midline, at the same height as the dot on i.

What are some good words to practise cursive j with?

Good practice words for cursive j are jam, jump, jelly, jacket and journey. The join is what to watch: the undercurve out of j has to reach the baseline before the next letter starts, or the two run together. Watch the tail too: j should drop a full space below the baseline and come back up without cutting into the next letter. The practice sheet on this page rules the first two, jam and jump; the worksheet generator will rule the rest.
